Columbus Middle School 8th Graders Get a Dose of Reality

Approximately 300 8th grade students at Columbus Middle School will take part in the third annual Reality 101 event, made possibly by the School-Business partnership between Columbus Public Schools and Drive for Five. These students will take on the role of a 28-30 year old adult, with an occupation, salary, marital status and children. They then enter the gymnasium that has been transformed into a Reality 101 event area where they must purchase monthly goods and services from community and business representatives.

The Reality 101 Event is designed to:

Introduce real life financial scenarios to the students

Teach students the differences between needs and wants

Teach financial planning and responsibility
